Are There Fire Emblem Black Characters

The Fire Emblem series has not been too representative of other ethnic backgrounds. However, Fire Emblem Engage black characters are indeed present in the game.

From the marketing so far, there are two Fire Emblem Engage black characters that are confirmed to be in the game. One is a princess named Timerra, who is happy-go-lucky and free-spirited, and the other is her younger brother Fogado. He’s also optimistic about the world, just like his sister. Their roles as princess and prince of Solm seem to be important, making this a great step for representation within the JRPG genre.

It’s refreshing to see a cast of JRPG characters include heroes from an underrepresented ethnicity. It doesn’t happen often in this genre. Kids and teenagers who play Fire Emblem Engage will look up to these characters, and that’s absolutely wonderful. More representation means further acceptance and love for minority ethnicities around the world.

Other JRPGs with Black Characters

This isn’t the first time the Fire Emblem series has featured black characters. In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Claude is the leader of the Leicester Alliance featured in the game. It also had Dedue and Petra, who are both characters that Fire Emblem fans have loved. Perhaps either Dedue and Petra could be a DLC emblem for Fire Emblem Engage.

While it’s not on the Nintendo Switch, the upcoming JRPG Forspoken has a female black protagonist Frey Holland played by Ella Balinska and a female black antagonist named Tanta Sila portrayed by Janina Gavankar. We’re definitely seeing a shift towards more representation in games in recent years, and that’s only a good thing.

Final Fantasy XIII has also featured a memorable black character named Sazh. There is an emotional story within his narrative, and he’s a well-rounded character. He might be the comedic relief at times, but when times are tough, you’ll see Sazh go through some emotional stakes.
