What is Valheim, and Why is it Perfect for the Nintendo Switch?

There are a plethora of survival games available on the Nintendo Switch, with the likes of This War of Mine, The Long Dark, and even Minecraft among the many that quickly come to mind.

But, we’ve never seen anything quite ambitious as Valheim, and I believe it would make a fantastic addition to your Nintendo Switch library – should it ever become available. Stick with me, let me tell you why.

What is Valheim?

Originally releasing into Early Access on Steam in early 2021, Valheim took the survival world by storm, and fans of the genre loaded up their PC’s to take a look at this Norse-inspired survival game.

It’s easy to see why Valheim is so well received with its never-ending gameplay, epic boss fights and the ability to experience it all with up to 10 people. But what exactly do you do?

Valheim is set in a massive procedurally-generated world where every biome is immersive and distinct, with unique enemies, resources and crafting recipes to discover, all wrapped in a Viking-esque bow. Build your base, craft the best armour and weapons, fish, farm, explore on foot, and on boat – the world of Valheim really is your oyster.

Let’s talk a little about the building in Valheim, shall we? It’s such a huge part of the game, and it’s so in depth! Everything you build has structural integrity, meaning you need to build it in a sensible way so that it won’t come crashing down.

As you progress through the game you will be able to upgrade your base, inside and out. Starting with basic straw, working your way up to stone. Also, the sheer amount of decorations on offer means you can make your perfect Viking home. Want a log fire in the middle of your bedroom? Done. Want a huge dining room table? Done. It’s so much fun, and you will spend an embarrassing amount of time building and decorating.

Just like any survival game, Valheim requires you to make food and drinks but the slight difference here is they don’t help to keep you alive. No. This one takes out that aspect and instead allows you to brew up tasty meals in order to gain specific bonuses and attributes to assist you on your journey, which we believe to be a better use of food. Don’t you?

The world of Valheim itself is huge, and dangerous. There are numerous enemies out to kill you, and picking and choosing your battles is key to survival. Enemies will upscale along with your level, so you’re never going to encounter something that is way too overpowered for you (unless you accidentally summon a boss fight you wasn’t prepared for), but that doesn’t mean they don’t come with their own challenges. Teaming up with friends is best way to stay alive here, so it’s a good job you can bring plenty with you.

Why is Valheim Perfect for the Nintendo Switch?

I believe Valheim would be perfect for the Nintendo Switch purely because its a great game to sit back and lose yourself in. It is what you decide it is. Do you want to just relax and not have to worry about getting killed every few minutes? That’s fine, just go fishing or spend hours building your base area. Want to feel good about your gaming abilites? Go explore and kill everything and anything you can find. And being able to do this in the comfort of your own bed would be amazing. Sadly, it will just have to remain as a fantasy right now.

Valheim has been confirmed to be coming to the Xbox sometime this year, but no plans have been announced for any other system. Disappointing, yes. But it means that the title is being adapted for consoles, and that gives us hope that it will one day come to the Switch. I mean, if Ark can do it, anything can right?

Valheim is already sitting in the ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ section on Steam, with consistent updates giving you more and more to do. Just imagine that coming to one of the most popular consoles around!

Though it would be quite a demanding game for the Switch, I still believe it would be possible, and could run great. It has controller support on Steam, so the buttons should be easily remapped to the Switch layout.
